Mel and Steve

Melisa and Steve Richardson

Melisa Richardson and her husband Steve are avid travelers, and have traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, Australasia and the Americas in styles ranging from backpacking to 5-star luxury by land and sea, and have loved every minute of it! After coming home, telling their friends of their adventures, and hearing “your trips are so great, will you plan ours?” for the 100th time,  Mel decided to launch her business.  She started Leave It To Mel Travel in 2006 to create custom itineraries with unique experiences.

Leave It To Mel Travel is an official Travel Agency for the Cruise Industry, a California registered seller of travel (CST 2087260-40), and is licensed by the State of California Department of Insurance to sell travel insurance.  Melisa Richardson is a Certified Travel Associate, a designation conferred by The Travel Institute upon travel professionals who complete a rigorous certification program, demonstrate essential knowledge and experience, and maintain high standards of professionalism.  She is also an Accredited Cruise Counselor, a designation conferred by Cruise Lines International Association, Inc. upon dedicated travel professionals who have completed an extensive program of classroom training, cruise experience, ship inspections, and attendance at industry events.

Mel runs an honest business – she acts as a consultant and advocate on behalf of her clients and strives to work only with companies that operate ethically.  Melisa Richardson also believes that travel is essential to the human soul, and believes that if people traveled more, they would ‘wag more and bark less.’

Melisa has over 15 years of experience in the travel industry, including stints as a Convention Services manager for Hilton Hotels, a career as an ‘innsitter’ (interim innkeeper) for the bed and breakfast industry, and two terms of service on the board of directors for the California Association of Bed and Breakfast Inns.  She hasn’t stopped traveling since her first trans-Atlantic flight at age 3 to visit her family in Spain.

Steve teaches Mathematics and Computer Science at Lake Tahoe Community College.  He came to teaching after 15 years of working in the computing industry.  His experiences travelling began from age 9 when his family moved to The Netherlands for five years, and later to Tokyo, Japan for his senior year in high school.  Steve spent two years in Fiji as a Peace Corps volunteer.  He is Leave It To Mel’s information technology guy.
